Our story

The problem was real.
The solution didn't exist.

Every night felt like a compromise.

I'm 5'1". Mike is 6'1". He'd toss, turn, kick, and snore. On the nights my daughter slept beside me, she did the same. I found myself choosing between sleeping next to the people I loved and getting the rest I desperately needed.

When we realized there wasn't a bed designed for real life, we decided to build one.

That's how Castaway Bed began.

The moment everything changed

After another sleepless night I walked into the living room exhausted. Mike was sitting on the couch eating a bowl of cereal like it was any other morning. He smiled and asked how I slept.

I laughed, and said it. Without missing a beat, he replied, "Maybe we can make that happen."

What started as one frustrated comment turned into sketches, engineering sessions, prototypes, testing, redesigns, patent work, and countless late nights chasing an idea we couldn't stop thinking about.

No one should have to choose between a good night's sleep and the person they love.

One conversation changed everything.

After another sleepless night, one simple idea sparked a question: what if a bed could give couples the best of both worlds?

02March 2025

The first prototype took shape.

We built a scale model to prove the concept before investing in a full-size prototype.

03April 2025

The real work began.

Engineering drawings, patent research, and countless design decisions transformed a simple idea into something we could actually build.

04Late April 2025

The first full-size prototype came to life.

It wasn't beautiful, but for the first time, the concept actually worked. That moment proved we were building something worth pursuing.

05Summer 2025

We kept refining every detail.

Every revision solved another problem. From engineering challenges to usability, we kept improving the design until it felt effortless.

06Fall 2025

560 people joined our waitlist in just three weeks.

Before investing further, we wanted to know if other couples struggled with the same problem. The response confirmed we weren't building this just for ourselves.

07Winter 2025–26

Testing. Refinement. Repeat.

We continued testing, improving, and fine-tuning every detail until the experience felt as intuitive as we imagined from day one.

08Spring 2026

Preparing for launch.

With the product finalized, we focused on building the Castaway Bed brand, website, and customer experience from the ground up.

09April 2026

Castaway Bed launched.

What began as one late-night conversation officially became a company, introducing an entirely new way for couples to sleep together.

For nearly two decades, Veronica has helped leading ecommerce brands build, launch, and grow online. Castaway Bed was born from a personal problem she refused to accept, and a belief that couples shouldn't have to choose between quality sleep and sleeping together.

Michael Strem

Co-founder

An engineer and lifelong builder, Mike has spent nearly two decades designing, building, and solving complex technical challenges. He led the engineering, prototyping, and product development that transformed one late-night conversation into a USPTO allowed invention.
