Safety · The long version

A bed that only moves when you tell it to.

Castaway is a motorized split king bed frame that opens and closes to reveal a hidden center platform.

Because it moves, safety was never an afterthought. Every decision, from how the switch works, to where it's placed, to how the system behaves under power, was designed to make one thing clear:

Nothing happens unless you make it happen.

This page walks through exactly how that works. No shortcuts, no vague claims...just how the bed is designed and how to use it safely in a real home.

How it works

Safety comes from how the bed is controlled.

Castaway doesn't rely on sensors or automation. It's designed around simple, physical control...the kind that stops immediately when you stop.

01 · Control

Dedicated buttons for open and close. No toggle, no guessing.

The switch has two buttons. Press and hold the right button to open. Press and hold the left button to close.

Each button does one thing. The bed only moves while a button is actively pressed, and it stops immediately when you release.

02 · Placement

The switch is mounted on the back side of the nightstand, facing the wall.

There's no remote, no app, and no controls on the bed itself.

One physical location, two simple buttons, nothing hidden.

03 · Behavior

Movement is slow, audible, and fully interruptible.

A full cycle takes about 15 to 20 seconds.

You can stop at any point, and reverse direction by switching to the other button.

04 · Power control

You can fully disable the bed in seconds.

If you have small children in the home or just want extra peace of mind, you can simply unplug the bed.

It's the simplest way to ensure it cannot move at all.

The switch

Two buttons. Press and hold. That's it.

Castaway has one switch, with two clearly dedicated buttons.

The right button opens the bed. The left button closes it. Each button only works while you're actively pressing it, and the bed stops the moment you let go.

There's no delay, no continuation, and no automatic completion of a cycle.

  • Separate open and close buttons
  • No remote or app
  • No timers or scheduling
  • No voice activation
  • Stops instantly when released
  • Fully interruptible at any point

Press and hold a button to try it.

This behaves exactly like the real switch.

Real life use

How families use it at different stages.

Castaway is a bed frame, not a medical or infant sleep product. How you use it safely depends on your stage of life.

Stage 01

Newborn
(0–12 months)

Use a separate, certified sleep product.

  • Place a certified bassinet or bedside sleeper on the center platform
  • Follow standard safe sleep guidelines (firm surface, on back, no loose bedding)
  • Never place an infant directly on the center platform or any mattress surface on the bed
Stage 02

Toddler
(1–4 years)

More flexibility, with supervision.

  • The center platform can be used for co-sleeping if you choose
  • Always clear the bed before operating it
  • Operate the switch yourself and watch the bed move
  • Keep the bed closed when it's not being supervised
Stage 03

5+ years

Functions like a standard bed.

  • The bed can remain closed as a king-style setup
  • The motor behaves the same, manual and fully controlled
  • No ongoing adjustments or updates required
Before every use

A simple habit for every open and close.

Like any moving furniture, Castaway works best when the space around it is clear. These three checks take less than ten seconds.

01

Clear the bed

Remove pillows, blankets, and anything loose from the space between platforms.

02

Check the area

Make sure kids, pets, hands, and feet are clear of the space between platforms.

03

Watch while operating

Keep eyes on the bed the whole time. Release the button if anything enters the area.

For homes with small children: as an extra precaution, some families choose to unplug the bed when it's not being used. This isn't a required step, just an option if you want added peace of mind.

Important to understand

What Castaway does not do.

We designed this bed to avoid complexity. That means removing anything that could trigger movement without you intending it.

  • It does not move on its own
  • It does not respond to voice, apps, or remotes
  • It does not run on a timer or schedule
  • It does not continue moving after you release a button
  • It does not resume after a power interruption
  • It does not rely on software or updates

Everything comes back to one thing: it only moves while you're actively pressing a button.

From the founder

"We knew early on that if this bed was going to move, it had to be completely predictable.

No automation. No surprises. No situation where it does something on its own.

It only moves when you tell it to, and it stops the second you don't."

— Veronica, Co-founder

Safety questions

Can the bed move on its own?

No. The bed only moves while one of the two buttons is actively being pressed. If you let go, it stops immediately.

How does the switch work?

The switch has two clearly dedicated buttons. The right button opens the bed, the left button closes it. Each button only moves the bed in one direction, and only while you're holding it down. There's no toggle, no combined start or stop, and no way to accidentally reverse direction without switching buttons.

How do I keep small children from activating it?

The switch is mounted on the back side of the nightstand, facing the wall. There are no other controls on the bed, no app, and no remote. If you have small children in the home and want extra peace of mind, you can also choose to unplug the bed when it's not in use.

What happens if I stop mid-cycle?

The bed stops immediately in place. You can leave it there, continue, or press the other button to reverse direction.

What happens if power is lost?

The bed stops and stays in place. It does not restart automatically when power returns.

Is this safe for a newborn?

Castaway is a bed frame, not an infant sleep product. For newborns, always use a certified bassinet or bedside sleeper placed on the center platform, and follow standard safe sleep guidelines. Never place an infant directly on the center platform or any mattress surface on the bed.

Are there pinch points?

Like any moving furniture, there are areas where surfaces come together. Movement is slow and fully controlled. Keep hands, feet, pets, and objects clear of the space between platforms during operation, and release the button if anything enters the area.

Can I leave the bed partially open?

Yes. The bed stays exactly where you stop it. You can leave it fully closed, fully open, or anywhere in between.

Simple control. Nothing automatic.

Castaway is designed to behave exactly how you expect, no more, no less.

You're always in control of when it moves, and whether it moves at all.

Please note

Castaway is a bed frame with a motorized opening feature. Always supervise use, keep the area around the bed clear during operation, and release the button if anything enters the space between platforms. Not intended for unsupervised use by small children. For infant sleep, always use a certified bassinet or bedside sleeper and follow standard safe sleep guidelines.
